eBay “CINDERELLA” ORIGINAL PLATE SIGNED ETCHING BY BULGARIAN / FRENCH ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER JULES PASCIN (1885-1930) This original soft ground etching, of Cinderella being fitted with the shoe as the two sisters look on, is signed in the plate by the artist lower right: Pascin. The title of this etching is “Cinderella”. It was created by Jules Pascin in 1929 for the illustrated book “Cendrillon” by Charles Perrault. The book contained five original Jules Pascin etchings, each published in an edition of only 88 impressions. The plates were then canceled by adding horizontal and vertical lines. This etching is one of the posthumous impressions (restrike) published from the original cancelled plate by the Collector’s Guild, New York after Pascin’s death, circa 1960s. The total number of the posthumous etchings published is unknown. The plate mark image size measures 13 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches, printed in brown on cream wove paper, the sheet measures 17 5/8 x 13 1/4 inches. The etching comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: The etching has evidence of a faint mat burn outline 3/8 inch outside the plate mark, and also evidence of light toning to the margins. The verso has evidence of faint tape residue along the top edge, otherwise the etching is in very good condition, a fine crisp clean impression with no evidence of any damage to the image. Jules Pascin, known as the “Prince of Montparnasse” was one of the most famous erotic artists of the early twentieth century. He spent much of his youth at a local bordello where he was cared for by the Madame. At the age of seventeen he traveled to Berlin, Vienna and Munich and supported himself by selling drawings to leading German periodicals. His illustrations for the satirical magazine, Simplicissimus, gained him both an early and strong reputation throughout Europe. In 1905 Pascin moved to Paris and immediately became a leading figure among the artists of Montmartre. His reputation was based upon his erotically charged depictions of the female nude in pastels and etchings. Many scholars have compared his erotic art to that of Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas. During the First World War, Jules Pascin moved to America living in New York for a period of ten years. During that time he taught and influenced a number of American artists, most notably Emil Ganso. __________________________________ ATTENTION!
